New Delhi: The 72nd National Film Awards are set to be presented on September 22 at Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, with veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024.
President Droupadi Murmu will present the awards at the ceremony, which will honour achievements in Indian cinema for 2024. The National Film Awards, instituted in 1954, recognise excellence across feature films, non-feature films and writing on cinema.
Anant Nag to receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award
The government announced the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024 for Anant Nag in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema and a career spanning more than five decades. The award will be presented during the National Film Awards ceremony on September 22.
‘Article 370’ bags Best Feature Film
The winners for the 2024 edition were announced in July. ‘Article 370’ was named Best Feature Film, while ‘Bhangaar’ won Best Non-Feature Film and ‘Ram-Nami’ was selected as Best Documentary.
Mammootty for Bramayugam and Kartik Aaryan for Chandu Champion will share the Best Actor in a Leading Role award. Yami Gautam was named Best Actress in a Leading Role for Article 370.
Randeep Hooda won Best Debut Film of a Director for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, while Rajkumar Periasamy was named Best Director for Amaran.
Other films receiving honours include Kalki 2898 AD, Pushpa: The Rule Part-02, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Stree 2 and Amaran, among several other productions across languages and categories.
Awards ceremony moves beyond Delhi
This year’s ceremony at Ekta Nagar marks a new approach by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to take the National Film Awards to different parts of the country rather than holding them exclusively in the national capital.
The ministry said the move is intended to bring the celebration of Indian cinema closer to different regions and reflect the country’s linguistic, cultural and cinematic diversity.
With filmmakers, actors, technicians and other members of the film industry expected to gather at Ekta Nagar, the September 22 ceremony will formally confer the 72nd National Film Awards for achievements in Indian cinema during 2024.
