New Delhi: The Ministry of Ayush has called for greater awareness, preventive care and comprehensive healthcare for women experiencing menopause, emphasising physical health, emotional well-being and quality of life.

In a statement ahead of World Menopause Day on October 18, the ministry said the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) was working to improve understanding of menopausal health and strengthen research into supportive care.

Menopause is a natural biological stage, generally occurring between 45 and 55 years of age. Symptoms may include irregular menstruation, hot flushes, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, mood changes, joint pain and anxiety. Ayurveda discusses this phase under the concept of Rajonivritti.

Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, said women’s health required sustained attention throughout life. He highlighted Ayurveda’s emphasis on preventive care, individualised treatment and appropriate lifestyle practices.

Prof. Rabinarayan Acharya, director general of CCRAS, described menopause as a natural transition rather than a disorder. He said the council was researching traditional formulations, including Ashokarista and Amalaki Rasayana, for their potential role in supporting health during menopause.

Dr N. Srikanth, deputy director general of CCRAS, highlighted diet, yoga, meditation and emotional support as components of holistic care.

The ministry identified dietary guidance, counselling, Rasayana therapies and yoga as traditional approaches to managing menopausal concerns. Formulations such as Lodhrasava, Usheerasava, Chandanadi Loha and Mukta Shukti were also mentioned, with their use advised under qualified healthcare supervision.

A balanced diet containing adequate protein, calcium and essential nutrients is important for maintaining muscle strength and bone health. Yoga and relaxation practices may support sleep and emotional well-being.

The ministry also recommended avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol and managing stress.

The Ministry of Ayush and CCRAS said research would focus on scientific evidence and clinical outcomes. They called for open conversations, timely care and greater awareness to help women navigate menopause confidently.
