Mumbai: The southwest monsoon intensified across Maharashtra on Wednesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue weather alerts for 31 districts amid forecasts of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
Of the affected districts, 25 have been placed under a yellow alert, while six are under an orange alert, indicating the likelihood of more intense weather activity in the coming days.
Heavy rain has continued to batter several parts of the state, including Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, over the past two days. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), as many as 113 incidents of fallen trees and branches were reported across Mumbai in the last 24 hours. Of these, 40 were recorded in the city area, 23 in the eastern suburbs and 50 in the western suburbs.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for districts including Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nashik, Washim, Solapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahilyanagar, Bhandara, Buldhana, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Kolhapur, Sangli, Nanded and Nagpur.

An orange alert has been sounded for Pune, Yavatmal, Latur, Dharashiv, Chandrapur and Satara districts, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely.
Weather experts attributed the intensified rainfall to the interaction of three weather systems, which has enhanced monsoon activity over the region. The coastal Konkan belt, Mumbai and parts of Goa have been witnessing particularly heavy showers.
