Bengaluru: The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has stirred a political row by alleging that traffic violations have been registered against the official vehicle of Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge, with pending fines yet to be cleared.
The claim, made in a post by BJP’s Karnataka unit on social media platform X, comes amid the state government’s announcement of a 50% waiver on pending e-challan fines from June 21 to July 10. The BJP took a swipe at the minister, who had shared posts urging citizens to comply with traffic rules.
According to the BJP, four traffic violations were recorded against a vehicle bearing registration number KA42 GA 0099, which the party claimed was the home minister’s official car. The alleged offences include overspeeding and failure to wear seat belts, detected through traffic surveillance cameras. The party said fines totalling Rs 2,500 were pending.
“Traffic rules are about public safety, not just awareness campaigns. When a minister’s vehicle violates them, it raises serious questions,” the BJP said in its post.

The allegations quickly triggered debate online. However, there was no immediate response from Priyank Kharge or his office to the claims. The state government has also not issued an official clarification on whether the vehicle belongs to the minister or the status of the alleged fines.
