London: An oil tanker sailing off the coast of Oman near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz caught fire after being struck by an unidentified projectile on Monday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The incident occurred around eight nautical miles east of Limah, Oman, when the projectile hit the port (left) side of the southbound tanker, triggering a fire. No immediate details were available on casualties or the extent of the damage.

The attack has renewed concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes, at a time when the United States and Iran are engaged in ceasefire and diplomatic talks.
