From Chikkamagaluru to space-tech success: How Pixxel CEO Awais Ahmed built a global startup.. Childhood fascination with space turns into entrepreneurial journey

Shivamogga: A childhood spent in Aldoor village of Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district has culminated in a remarkable entrepreneurial journey for Awais Ahmed, who has emerged as one of India’s leading young space-tech founders. At just 28, Ahmed heads Bengaluru-based Pixxel Space Technologies, which became the first Indian private space company to sign a contract with NASA for supplying hyperspectral Earth observation data.

Ahmed attributes his fascination with space to his father, Nadeem Ahmed, who ran a pharmacy in Aldoor and regularly brought home science books. Reading about the solar system, nebulae and black holes fuelled his curiosity from an early age. His parents, Nadeem Ahmed and Ghazala Tashfeen, encouraged him to pursue his passion despite financial constraints.

Education, ISRO exposure and meeting Elon Musk shaped career

Ahmed studied at Akshara Public School, Poorna Pragya School and completed his pre-university education in Mangaluru before graduating in Mathematics and Manufacturing Engineering from BITS Pilani. His participation in the Student Satellite Project, where he worked alongside ISRO scientists, proved to be a turning point.

Another defining moment came in 2017 when he travelled to the US as part of the Hyperloop India team for the SpaceX Hyperloop competition. There, he met Elon Musk and witnessed SpaceX’s operations firsthand, an experience he says reinforced his decision to build a career in space technology.

Pixxel’s rapid rise

Ahmed founded Pixxel in 2019 before completing his graduation. Since then, the company has launched nine hyperspectral satellites designed to generate high-resolution Earth observation data for applications ranging from agriculture and soil analysis to environmental monitoring and natural resource management.

The startup has raised nearly ₹960 crore in funding and now employs around 275 people. Ahmed credits the Centre’s space-sector reforms and the opening up of opportunities for private players as key factors behind the company’s growth.

Reflecting on his son’s achievements, Nadeem Ahmed recalled taking loans and pledging family gold to support his education. “His hard work is the reason for today’s success. His achievements are a matter of pride for our family,” he said.
