Government rolls out digital platforms to improve transparency, efficiency in justice delivery
New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday said it has deployed a range of technology-driven platforms to improve the speed, efficiency and transparency of India’s criminal justice system, with digital tools now supporting police investigations, courts, prisons, forensic laboratories and prosecution.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar said the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) has streamlined police processes from FIR registration to charge-sheet filing, while also enabling investigation tracking, criminal records management and integration with other components of the criminal justice system.
The government said the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) facilitates seamless exchange of FIRs, charge sheets, court orders, forensic reports and prison records among police, courts, prisons, prosecution and forensic agencies, reducing delays in case processing.
To strengthen investigations, the Centre has introduced several specialised digital platforms, including the Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offences (ITSSO), e-Sakshya for secure management of digital evidence, e-Summons for electronic service of court notices, and the Medico Legal Examination and Postmortem Reporting (MedLEaPR) system for digitising medico-legal reports.
The government also highlighted Nyay Shruti for virtual court appearances, e-Forensics for end-to-end forensic case management, e-Prisons for digitising prison administration, and e-Prosecution to strengthen coordination between police and prosecutors before cases reach the courts.
In addition, the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) has been established as a nationwide biometric fingerprint database, enabling law enforcement agencies to rapidly match fingerprints collected from crime scenes with records of accused, arrested and convicted persons.
The Centre said these initiatives are aimed at ensuring faster investigations, improved coordination among agencies, greater transparency and more efficient delivery of justice through the use of digital technology.
