New Delhi: A delegation of Karnataka Members of Parliament, led by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, on Thursday met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, seeking the Centre’s intervention after the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) directed Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.
According to Pralhad Joshi, the delegation informed the Union minister that Karnataka was facing a severe rainfall deficit, resulting in reduced inflows into major reservoirs, a looming drinking water shortage and drought-like conditions in several parts of the state. The MPs urged the Centre to take appropriate steps to safeguard Karnataka’s interests.
In a post on social media, Joshi said the delegation highlighted the state’s water scarcity and stressed that ensuring drinking water for residents should remain the top priority while addressing the Cauvery dispute.
The meeting comes a day after the CWMA upheld the earlier directive issued by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC), rejecting Karnataka’s appeal for a review of the release order.
Meanwhile, protests against the CWMA’s decision have intensified in several parts of Karnataka, particularly in Mandya, with pro-Kannada organisations warning of a possible Karnataka bandh if the order is implemented.
The delegation included former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Jagadish Shettar, and MPs Govinda Karajol, P.C. Gaddigowdara, P.C. Mohan and Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri.
