Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has no proposal at present to establish a second international airport for Bengaluru or a separate airport in Tumakuru district, Industries and Infrastructure Development Minister M.B. Patil has clarified.

Replying to a question by Tumakuru City MLA G.B. Jyothi Ganesh in the Assembly, Patil said the Centre’s greenfield airport policy generally does not permit a new civil airport within 150 km by air distance of an existing airport.

If a proposal falls within this radius, the Centre would take a final decision after assessing its potential impact on the existing airport, he said.

Patil also clarified that there was no question of allocating funds for a Tumakuru airport in the upcoming state budget as no such project is currently under consideration by the government.

Several leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, Union Minister V. Somanna and BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra, have previously demanded that Bengaluru’s second international airport be established in Tumakuru.

However, Patil reiterated that the state government has not formulated any plan for the project at present.
