New Delhi: The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), launched in 2014 to expand financial inclusion, has completed 12 years with 59.09 crore bank accounts opened as of August 19, 2026, according to the government.

Of these, 32.92 crore accounts belong to women, while 45.95 crore accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas. The scheme has helped bring underserved sections into the formal banking system by providing access to savings, credit, insurance, pensions and digital payments.

Deposits surge 20-fold; RuPay cards cross 41 crore

PMJDY accounts have increased nearly four-fold from 14.72 crore in 2015, while deposits have risen from ₹15,670 crore in March 2015 to ₹3.16 lakh crore as of August 19, 2026.

Around 41.29 crore RuPay debit cards have also been issued to account holders. The scheme provides basic banking services without requiring a minimum balance and offers an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000, subject to eligibility.

PMJDY accounts are also linked to schemes such as PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, PM Suraksha Bima Yojana, Atal Pension Yojana and MUDRA, besides facilitating Direct Benefit Transfers.

The government’s Financial Inclusion Index has risen from 53.9 in 2018 to 67 in 2026, reflecting wider access to formal financial services.
