India, Afghanistan review measures to boost bilateral trade, economic ties

New Delhi: India and Afghanistan on Tuesday reviewed measures to facilitate bilateral trade and strengthen economic cooperation during a virtual meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) on Trade, Commerce and Investment.

The meeting, held on September 1, was attended by officials from both countries, including representatives from commerce, industry, customs, regulatory bodies and diplomatic missions.

The discussions focused on trade facilitation, customs cooperation, visa facilitation for Afghan traders, banking and financial cooperation, and pharmaceutical and agricultural trade.

The two sides also discussed energy cooperation, investment promotion, tariff concessions, cargo connectivity and port-related issues.

India and Afghanistan agreed to strengthen institutional cooperation and take follow-up measures, including enhanced customs and data-sharing mechanisms, greater regulatory cooperation in pharmaceuticals and agriculture, improved trade connectivity and promotion of investment and business-to-business engagement.

The meeting was described as being held in a warm and constructive atmosphere. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral trade, commerce and investment ties and agreed to maintain continued engagement on the issues discussed.
