New Delhi: The death toll in the building collapse at Satya Niketan in Delhi on Sunday afternoon has risen to three, while nine people have been rescued so far. More than 40 others are feared trapped under the debris, officials said.

The building collapsed around 1.30pm and was reportedly being used as a paying guest (PG) accommodation, with around 40 people living there. The 40-50-year-old structure had a basement and five upper floors.

Repair work was reportedly underway in the basement when the building came crashing down. Officials are also examining whether heavy rainfall may have contributed to the collapse.

Teams from the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Services, NDRF and Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) rushed to the spot after receiving information about the collapse.

Rescue personnel are using JCB machines and gas cutters to clear the debris and search for survivors. Lighting arrangements have been made to continue the operation after dark, while oxygen cylinders have been kept ready at the site.

Those rescued with injuries have been shifted to AIIMS for treatment.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the hospital and met the injured, while also reviewing the rescue operation at the site. Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu and Mayor Pravesh Vahi also visited the spot and took stock of the situation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
