New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, with the two leaders discussing global conflicts, multilateral reforms and emerging challenges.
Guterres congratulated Modi on India assuming the BRICS chairmanship for the fourth time, according to an official statement.
During the meeting, Modi and Guterres underlined the importance of multipolarity and the need to reform multilateral institutions to make them more representative of present-day geopolitical realities.
The two leaders also discussed the long-pending issue of reforming the UN Security Council, amid growing calls for greater representation of developing countries in global decision-making bodies.
Their talks covered a range of pressing global issues, including ongoing conflicts and freedom of navigation, along with sustainable development and global food security.
The leaders also exchanged views on the need for human-centric artificial intelligence and progress in renewable energy, reflecting the growing importance of technology and clean energy in addressing global challenges.
The meeting came as world leaders and representatives gathered in New Delhi for the BRICS Summit, with India’s role in strengthening cooperation among emerging and developing economies in focus.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Modi wished Guterres the very best for the remainder of his tenure as UN secretary-general.
The talks also highlighted India’s emphasis on a more representative and inclusive multilateral order, with cooperation on global development and emerging technologies forming an important part of the discussions.
