BENGALURU: Actor and social activist Chetan Ahimsa has said that merely carrying a photograph of Dr BR Ambedkar or garlanding his statue does not make a person an Ambedkarite.
His remarks came amid a controversy over alleged derogatory comments about Ambedkar and the Dalit community, following a complaint and registration of an atrocity case against former MP Pratap Simha.
Speaking to reporters, Chetan said Ambedkar’s photograph had become common in public and political spaces, but many who display it had not necessarily studied his writings or understood his ideas.
“Ambedkar cannot be confined to one caste. What is important is understanding and following his ideology,” Chetan said.
He also criticised different political ideological groups and parties for claiming an association with Ambedkar’s legacy without, in his view, consistently implementing his principles. He said Ambedkar’s vision centred on building an egalitarian society and that merely putting up statues or paying tribute would not be enough.
Focus on Ambedkar’s vision
Chetan said the focus should instead be on understanding Ambedkar’s vision and working towards social equality.
“His ideas, his vision and his dream of an equal society are what we need,” he said, adding that awareness campaigns, social movements, public service and political organisation were necessary to work towards such a society.
Meanwhile, allegations against Simha relate to remarks he reportedly made during a public speech. A complaint alleged that he had made derogatory comments concerning the Dalit community and organisations working for the rights of marginalised groups. The allegations are the subject of the case registered against him.
Chetan’s comments have added to the ongoing debate over the use of Ambedkar’s image and legacy in public and political discourse.
