Delhi Police Defends CJP Protest Restrictions, Says Public Safety as Important as Right to Demonstrate

New Delhi: The Delhi Police has defended its security measures ahead of the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) protest, stating that while peaceful demonstrations are a constitutional right, public safety and the maintenance of law and order must also be ensured.

Responding to statements by CJP leaders asserting their right to protest, the police said prior permission was necessary to facilitate crowd management, regulate traffic and ensure the uninterrupted movement of emergency services.

The police emphasised the need to balance protesters’ rights with the safety of residents, workers and traders, as well as the security of key constitutional institutions.

Citing a protest held at Jantar Mantar in July, the police claimed that an event initially planned for one day continued for nearly a month and allegedly turned violent. According to the police, more than 200 personnel were injured during the unrest, while students were also hurt in the clashes.

Security has meanwhile been strengthened near the Delhi residence of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in view of the planned CJP demonstration. Additional Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel have been deployed, while local police are closely monitoring the situation.

Security arrangements have also been intensified at key entry points to the national capital. Police, Border Security Force (BSF) and traffic police personnel have been deployed at several locations, including the Chilla border connecting Noida and Mayur Vihar. Vehicle inspections have also been stepped up as part of precautionary measures.

The police said prior authorisation for demonstrations helps authorities plan security arrangements, manage crowds, make traffic diversions and ensure access for emergency services.

Reiterating its position, the Delhi Police said the measures were aimed at preventing violence and minimising disruption to the city’s daily activities while maintaining public safety.

The police’s claims regarding the July protest and the reported injuries have not been independently verified in the information available.
