Nagoya: India enjoyed a productive day in athletics at the Asian Games on Sunday, with Sarvesh Kushare and Ancy Sojan winning silver medals in the men’s high jump and women’s long jump respectively. Parul Chaudhary added a bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
Sarvesh Kushare cleared 2.25 metres on his second attempt to secure silver in the men’s high jump. The Indian athlete led the competition for a significant part of the final before eventually finishing second.
Kushare’s medal also ended a nearly five-decade wait for India in the men’s high jump at the Asian Games.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Kushare on the historic achievement, praising the determination and perseverance behind his performance. He said the medal marked a memorable moment for Indian athletics.
Ancy Sojan claims long jump silver
Ancy Sojan produced a best jump of 6.53 metres to finish second in the women’s long jump. China’s Huang Yingying took the gold after edging the Indian athlete.
Sojan’s performance earned praise from Prime Minister Modi, who congratulated her on the silver medal and described her effort as a strong and spirited display. He also wished the athlete continued success in future competitions.
Parul secures second straight bronze
Parul Chaudhary added another medal for India in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, finishing third with a personal best of 9:08.67.
The result marked her second consecutive Asian Games bronze in the event.
Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi won the gold medal in 9:04.36, while Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto Tanui took silver after clocking 9:06.82.
The three podium finishes further strengthened India’s athletics campaign in Nagoya, with the country adding medals across both field and track events.
