Ayurveda-yoga combination shows encouraging results in managing bedwetting among children: ITRA study
New Delhi: An eight-week clinical study conducted by the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), Jamnagar, has reported encouraging results from combining Ayurvedic medicine with yoga in managing nocturnal enuresis, commonly known as bedwetting, among children.
The study, involving around 38 children aged 6 to 14 years, found that those receiving Ayurvedic medicine along with selected yoga asanas showed greater improvement than those receiving Ayurvedic medicine alone. The findings have been published in the AYU Journal.
Conducted by ITRA’s Department of Kaumarbhritya (Paediatrics), the children were divided into two groups. One received Medhya Rasayana Churna, containing Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, Yashtimadhu and Guduchi, twice daily with milk. The second group received the same formulation along with Utkatasana, Ardha-Shalabhasana, Bhujangasana and Shavasana.

According to the study, the Ayurveda-only group recorded around 38% improvement in bedwetting frequency, compared with nearly 70% in the combined group. The latter group also reported approximately 61% improvement in memory, 66% reduction in irritability and 71% reduction in hyperactivity.
The research was conducted by Prof Vaidya Virendra Kori, Vaidya Sagar Bhinde and Vaidya Amisha Bavarva.
ITRA Director Prof Dr Tanuja Nesari said nocturnal enuresis could be associated with bladder-control difficulties as well as psychological and behavioural factors. The study highlighted the potential of combining traditional medicine with appropriate lifestyle practices, while stressing that childhood bedwetting should be addressed sensitively and with appropriate medical guidance.
