Guwahati: More than 5 lakh people continue to be affected by floods in seven districts of Upper Assam, although the overall flood situation has shown signs of improvement, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.
According to the ASDMA, 622 villages in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur and Kamrup (Metro) districts remain affected. Around 45,342 hectares of agricultural land are still submerged, causing significant losses to farmers.
The Dhansiri (South) river continues to flow above the danger mark at Numaligarh in Golaghat district, while water levels in other major rivers have receded. No fresh deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, though this year’s flood-related death toll has reached 75.
Charaideo remains the worst-hit district, with over 1.88 lakh people affected, followed by Sivasagar and Jorhat.
More than 90 relief camps and distribution centres are operating across the affected areas. Rescue and relief operations are being carried out by the NDRF, SDRF and Civil Defence personnel using 67 boats, while food, drinking water, medicines, baby food and tarpaulins are being supplied to flood-hit families. ASDMA said relief and rehabilitation efforts are continuing in coordination with district administrations.
