Bhopal: Heavy rains triggered flood-like conditions in several districts of eastern Madhya Pradesh on Friday, while parts of West Midnapore in West Bengal also witnessed severe flooding, prompting authorities to intensify rescue and relief operations.

In Madhya Pradesh, Dindori, Panna, Rewa, Satna and Chhatarpur reported flooding and waterlogging as rivers, including the Narmada and Mandakini, swelled. Schools were closed in Dindori and Maihar as a precaution.

In Rewa, around 3,000 people were shifted to 27 relief camps, while more than 4,000 people were rescued from flood-affected areas. Rescue teams, police and revenue officials have been deployed across vulnerable locations.

In Mauganj, the swollen Ashtabhuja River inundated Naigarhi village, trapping four construction workers. One worker was swept away by strong currents. In Dindori, rising water in the Khermer River forced the closure of the Dindori-Mandla highway. The Mandakini River also entered market areas in Chitrakoot, while Gupt Godavari caves were closed to tourists.

West Bengal flood damages 3,200 houses

In West Bengal’s Sabang area of West Midnapore, two people have died and around 3,200 houses have been damaged, according to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The state government announced ₹30,000 compensation for each affected family whose house was damaged.

Farmers covered under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana will be eligible for crop-loss compensation, while the government is examining support for other affected workers.
