New Delhi: Indian Railways has approved a ₹220-crore project to upgrade the electric traction system on the Wadi–Raichur section of South Central Railway, a move aimed at increasing capacity and improving operational efficiency on one of the country’s high-density rail corridors.

The project involves upgrading the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to a 2×25 kV system over a 102 route kilometre (204 track kilometre) double-line section.

The Wadi–Raichur stretch forms part of High Density Network (HDN) Route-7, which connects Mumbai, Pune, Wadi, Raichur, Guntakal, Kadapa, Renigunta and Chennai. The corridor is a key route for both passenger and freight movement.

According to the Railways, the upgraded traction system will enhance the section’s capability to handle increasing traffic demand by strengthening power supply for train operations. The project is expected to improve operational efficiency, ensure more reliable services and support the movement of heavier freight and passenger trains on the busy route.

The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to modernise its core infrastructure and expand capacity across high-density rail corridors. The national transporter said the project reflects its continued focus on developing a modern, reliable and future-ready railway network while improving efficiency for passengers and freight customers.
