Jail mobile phone controversy: Prajwal Revanna shifted to general barrack, officials face action
Bengaluru: Former MP Prajwal Revanna, who is serving a life sentence in a rape case, has been shifted from the VIP cell of Parappana Agrahara Central Jail to a general barrack following allegations that he used a mobile phone inside the prison.
The move comes after a 17-second video purportedly showing Prajwal speaking on a mobile phone from inside the jail surfaced on social media and triggered questions over security arrangements at the prison.
During a recent raid by the CCB at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, officials reportedly recovered a mobile phone, charger, pen drive and other items from Prajwal’s barrack. Sources said several OTT applications were also found on the device.
Prisons Department DGP Alok Kumar confirmed that a mobile phone and charger had been seized from Prajwal’s barrack.
Following the incident, Assistant Superintendent Iranna, who was on duty at the jail, was suspended. Jail Superintendent Anshu Kumar has also been served a show-cause notice in connection with the episode.
After the recovery of the mobile phone, Prajwal was moved to a general cell where he is housed with around 20 other prisoners. He has also been directed to wear the mandatory prison uniform and undertake assigned duties in the jail library.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the availability of prohibited electronic devices inside high-security prison facilities and the monitoring of inmates.
