Jog Falls may flow year-round under tourism department plan

Bengaluru: The Karnataka tourism department is working on a plan to ensure that the iconic Jog Falls remains a year-round attraction, rather than being dependent on monsoon flows.

Tourism minister K J George, during a recent review meeting, directed officials to expedite the ongoing development works at Jog Falls and complete the technical studies and statutory approvals required for the proposed project.

A key proposal under consideration is to maintain water flow at the waterfall during specified periods of the year by pumping water to its upper reaches. George directed officials to conduct a detailed feasibility study before taking the proposal forward.

The study will assess the quantity of water required, pumping capacity, electricity consumption, operational costs and the project’s long-term financial viability. Safety considerations will also have to be examined.

Officials have also been asked to speed up the process of obtaining necessary clearances from the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission and other relevant agencies.

“Jog Falls is one of Karnataka’s major tourist attractions and its tourism potential should not be restricted to the monsoon season. Our objective is to develop it as a destination that attracts visitors throughout the year,” George said.

He stressed that the proposal to regulate water flow should be taken forward only after a comprehensive assessment of its technical feasibility, power requirements, cost and safety implications.

A meeting with deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar is expected to be held soon to finalise the proposal, the minister said.

George also directed officials to prioritise tourist safety and complete ongoing works within the stipulated timelines. Departments concerned, including the Archaeology Department, have been asked to expedite no-objection certificates and other permissions needed for the development works.

The proposed initiative, if found technically and economically feasible, could help expand Jog Falls’ tourism season beyond the monsoon months.
