Bengaluru: Teachers in Karnataka will soon be allowed to use the honorific prefix ‘Tr.’ (Teacher) before their names, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Teachers’ Day.

Addressing teachers in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said the prefix would serve as a mark of respect for the selfless service rendered by teachers and their contribution to society.

‘Teachers play a key role in nation-building’

Shivakumar said teachers have a crucial role in shaping individuals and, in turn, building the nation.

“Every person’s life is shaped in some way by a teacher,” he said, highlighting the contribution of nearly 4.5 lakh teachers in Karnataka and more than one crore teachers across the country who work every day to shape the knowledge, personality and future of children.

From doctors, engineers and farmers to government officials, entrepreneurs and political leaders, people who have excelled in different fields have benefited from the guidance and efforts of their teachers, he said.

Teachers are also the first to identify a child’s potential and instil the confidence that “you can achieve it,” Shivakumar said.

‘Tr.’ is more than a title, it is a tribute to service

The Chief Minister said the proposed use of ‘Tr.’ before a teacher’s name should not be viewed merely as an honorific.

“It is a symbol of gratitude from society towards teachers who have dedicated their lives to shaping the future of children,” he said.

Shivakumar said a society that respects its teachers is more likely to have a bright future.

He added that every teacher who has guided children, corrected their behaviour and given wings to their dreams deserves recognition and respect from the people of Karnataka.
