CHENNAI: Vice President C P Radhakrishnan on Sunday urged young Indians to use their knowledge, innovation and skills for nation-building, calling on them to make “Nation First – Rashtra Pratham” their guiding principle.
Addressing the 22nd convocation of S R M Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) at Kattankulathur near Chennai, Radhakrishnan said the event marked not only the completion of academic studies but also the beginning of a lifelong journey of responsibility and service.
The Vice President highlighted the growing importance of artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, semiconductor research, robotics and biotechnology. These strategic sectors, he said, would play a major role in shaping future economies and societies.
He also stressed the importance of research that delivers tangible benefits to people. “Research achieves its highest purpose when it serves society,” he said, encouraging graduates to focus on innovation that can address real-world challenges.

Radhakrishnan highlighted the expansion of India’s higher education sector since 2014, noting the establishment of several IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, central universities and other institutions. He also pointed to the rise in women’s enrolment in higher education, from 1.57 crore in 2014-15 to 2.24 crore in 2023-24.
Describing youth as India’s greatest strength, he said graduates would have a crucial role in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047. “Do not merely prepare yourself for the future; prepare yourself to shape the future,” he said.
Radhakrishnan also expressed deep pain over the recent murder of a Tamil Nadu student allegedly linked to whistleblowing on the drug trade and urged youngsters to reject drugs and substance abuse.
He called on graduates to uphold constitutional values, respect diversity and place national interest above narrow self-interest.
