New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Madras High Court order that had set aside the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to provide government jobs to family members of those killed in the Karur stampede.

The stampede in Karur on September 27, 2025, claimed 41 lives and left more than 60 people injured. Following the tragedy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had on July 10 handed appointment orders to 31 family members of the deceased.

A bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran issued notices to the concerned parties while hearing petitions challenging the state government’s decision.

During the hearing, the bench questioned the petitioners’ opposition to the government’s policy, asking whether a victim’s son or daughter should not be given a government job if the deceased was the sole earning member of the family.

The Supreme Court passed the interim order while hearing petitions filed by the state government and other concerned parties.

The stay provides temporary legal protection to the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to offer employment to the families of those who died in the Karur stampede, pending further proceedings.
