New Delhi: The Centre on Friday launched the self-enumeration facility for the Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO) under Phase I of Census 2027 in Tamil Nadu and Tripura, marking the start of Census operations in the two states.
The self-enumeration window will remain open until July 31, after which door-to-door field enumeration will be carried out between August 1 and August 30. Households completing the online process have been asked to share their Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) with enumerators during field verification.
The Registrar General and Census Commissioner said field operations for the Houselisting and Housing Census are also underway in Kerala and Nagaland, while the first phase has already been completed in 29 States and Union Territories, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
For the first time, Census 2027 is being conducted using digital tools, with data collected through a dedicated mobile application while retaining the traditional door-to-door enumeration process. During the HLO phase, enumerators collect information on housing conditions, household details, amenities and assets through a questionnaire containing 33 notified questions.
The government reiterated that all information collected under the Census Act, 1948, will remain strictly confidential and will be used only for statistical purposes and development planning. Citizens have been urged to cooperate with enumerators and participate actively in the Census exercise.
