Kolkata: Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin on Sunday urged Bangladesh’s authorities to lift the ban on the Awami League and allow former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to return and participate in the democratic process.

Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Nasrin termed Hasina’s ouster and the ban on the Awami League “undemocratic”, saying the party should be allowed to contest elections. “I want Sheikh Hasina to return to Bangladesh and lead her party,” she said, adding that despite criticising Hasina in the past, she opposed banning the party.

Nasrin also expressed concern over the growing influence of religious fundamentalist groups in Bangladesh, alleging that minorities, including Hindus, Buddhists and Christians, continued to face persecution. She claimed the government had failed to act against those targeting Hindus and called for greater emphasis on education over religious institutions.

The writer also backed the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India, saying similar laws were needed in Bangladesh and Pakistan to ensure equal rights, particularly for women. “There should be one law for everyone. A UCC is essential to eliminate discrimination against women,” she said.

Nasrin, who returned to Kolkata after nearly two decades, also criticised the role of some madrasas, alleging that they contributed to religious extremism, and reiterated the need for reforms focused on education and equality.
