WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday hosted top technology and artificial intelligence executives at the White House for discussions on the rapid development of AI, safety measures and industry-led oversight.
The meeting brought together several prominent tech leaders, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, OpenAI President Greg Brockman and others.
During an interaction with reporters outside the West Wing, Trump introduced Pichai and described him as a “monster”, adding that “nobody knows him”. The remark was made while Trump was praising Pichai’s influence and achievements in the technology sector. Pichai responded with a light-hearted comment, saying he hoped it would be a “better tagline”.
The meeting also resulted in a voluntary accord on AI development and safety. Under the agreement, participating companies committed to putting internal controls in place and working with independent external auditors to assess safeguards for advanced AI systems. Board-level oversight was also included in the framework.
The accord is voluntary and not legally binding. Trump has backed industry self-regulation while continuing to emphasise rapid AI development and US leadership in the sector.
The discussions come amid a wider debate in the US over how advanced AI should be governed, with technology companies, lawmakers and policymakers weighing the balance between innovation, safety and regulatory oversight.
