Trump pauses planned Iran strike, says diplomacy may avert conflict

Washington/Tehran: US President Donald Trump on Sunday said the United States had suspended a planned military strike on Iran after requests from Tehran and several Middle Eastern countries to allow diplomacy a chance. In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the framework of a possible agreement had been reached.

He said the US military remained fully prepared for action but had decided to postpone the strike to facilitate negotiations. According to Trump, the proposed deal includes the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat. He also claimed that Israel supports the diplomatic initiative, though no official confirmation has come from Iran or Israel.

Earlier, Trump had warned that the US would continue military pressure until Iran was no longer capable of threatening American forces or pursuing nuclear weapons, while expressing doubts over the success of negotiations.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi warned the United States against any “adventurous” military action, saying Iran was fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and would respond decisively to any aggression. During separate calls with senior officials from Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, he cautioned that any US or Israeli attack, or regional support for such action, would invite a proportionate response.

Iran also accused Washington of violating the mid-June peace memorandum through continued military strikes, a blockade on Iranian ports and increased economic pressure, vowing to resist what it called “unlawful aggression.” The developments come amid renewed tensions following a brief pause in hostilities between the two countries.
