KATHMANDU: A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck a border area in Tibet near Nepal on Thursday afternoon, adding to concerns in the Himalayan region that has been reeling from devastating floods triggered by a glacier collapse.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at a depth of around 14 km. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property following the tremor.
The earthquake comes days after a massive flood along the Tibet-Nepal border caused widespread destruction. The disaster was triggered by snowfall and a glacier collapse on August 26, according to reports.
The death toll from the flood has climbed to 1,252, with rescue teams continuing search and recovery operations across affected districts.
Chitwan has recorded the highest number of recovered bodies at 355, followed by Nawalparasi East with 218 and Nawalparasi West with 208.
Rescue teams have also recovered 177 bodies in Nuwakot, 127 in Rasuwa, 69 in Gorkha, 60 in Dhading and 38 in Tanahun.
Search operations are continuing for those still missing, while authorities remain engaged in rescue and relief efforts in the flood-hit areas.
