Udupi (Karnataka): Gurudas Shenoy, affectionately known as ‘Shenoy Mama’, a veteran Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) volunteer from Kota in Udupi district, died in an accident, leaving behind a legacy of decades of grassroots service and unwavering commitment to the organisation.

In an emotional tribute, RSS Saha Sarakaryavaha Mukundji recalled Shenoy as a dedicated swayamsevak who never sought positions or recognition but remained steadfast in his daily organisational work. His familiar call of “Sangh Daksha!” at the Hire Mahalingeshwara Temple premises in Kota will no longer be heard, Mukundji said.

A Corporation Bank employee, Shenoy was known for his disciplined lifestyle, financial integrity and regular attendance at the daily shakha. Despite being meticulous about personal finances, he demonstrated complete devotion during Guru Vandana, offering all the money he brought from home, Mukundji recalled.

Shenoy also placed great importance on his children’s education. His sons, Sandesh, a software engineer working in Bengaluru, and Gaurish, a professor at MIT, were among his greatest achievements.

His daily routine reflected his deep religious devotion. After attending the morning shakha, he would collect flowers, including karaveera, tulasi and parijata, on his bicycle. His wife would string them into a garland, which he offered to Lord Krishna at Kashi Math in Kota after his ritual bath.

Even during the recent Vijayadashami pathasanchalana, Shenoy participated enthusiastically despite suffering from leg pain, walking with a determination that reportedly impressed younger volunteers.

Mukundji also recalled the contributions of generations of Sangh workers who sustained organisational activities in and around Kota despite threats, opposition and social humiliation.

As the RSS approaches its centenary celebrations, the passing of senior volunteers such as Shenoy marks the loss of a generation whose commitment helped sustain the organisation at the grassroots level.

For the people of Kota, Shenoy will be remembered not only for his organisational work but also for his familiar bicycle bell, daily temple visits and the flower garlands he carried to Lord Krishna.
