Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national celebrations of the 12th International Day of Yoga in Kolkata on Sunday, describing yoga as a powerful force that connects people across nations and cultures.

Addressing thousands of participants at Red Road, Modi said yoga has evolved into a global movement for wellness and harmony. “When yoga becomes a way of life, it becomes the foundation of human unity,” he said, noting that people across India and the world were participating in the celebrations.

The Prime Minister said this year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, highlights the role of yoga in helping people remain healthy, active and resilient throughout their lives. He noted that regular yoga practice improves flexibility, boosts energy levels, reduces stress and helps prevent lifestyle-related diseases.

Modi also underlined the importance of balance in daily life, citing teachings from the Bhagavad Gita. He said yoga teaches the art of living in a balanced manner through proper food habits, work, recreation and rest, while also promoting mental and physical well-being.

Highlighting West Bengal’s spiritual legacy, Modi recalled the contributions of Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Rabindranath Tagore and Sri Aurobindo to India’s spiritual and cultural traditions.

The Prime Minister urged people to make yoga an integral part of their daily lives rather than limiting it to an annual event. He also highlighted the success of the ‘Yoga 365’ initiative, which witnessed participation from more than three million people across 130 countries.

Concluding his address, Modi said a healthy society is the foundation of a strong and prosperous nation and wished for the well-being of all.
