New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Education has released the Performance Grading Index 2.0 for States and Union Territories (PGI-S) and the Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D) for the academic year 2025–26, providing a comprehensive assessment of school education performance across the country.

The ministry said the Indian school education system comprises more than 14.67 lakh schools, 1.03 crore teachers and nearly 24.72 crore students, making it one of the largest education systems in the world.

The PGI-S framework evaluates the performance of States and Union Territories using 70 indicators carrying a total weightage of 1,000 points. The indicators are grouped under two broad categories—Outcomes and Governance & Management—covering six domains: Learning Outcomes and Quality, Access, Infrastructure and Facilities, Equity, Governance Processes, and Teacher Education and Training.

The grading framework uses data from UDISE+, PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024, the PM POSHAN Portal, PRABAND Portal, and the Vidyanjali Portal.

The Ministry has also released the Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D), which assesses districts on educational outcomes and implementation of school education policies. The district-level index comprises 70 indicators with a total weightage of 600 points, spread across six categories and eleven domains, including learning outcomes, teacher availability, classroom management, infrastructure, digital learning, school safety and governance.

The PGI-D report is based on data collected from UDISE+, PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024, and the PRABANDH Portal.

According to the Ministry, the grading system is intended to help States, Union Territories and districts identify strengths and areas requiring improvement while encouraging healthy competition and evidence-based policymaking to improve the quality of school education across the country.
