London: World No. 1 Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon crown, defeating Alexander Zverev 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-4 in the men’s singles final to claim his second consecutive Wimbledon title.
After dropping a closely contested opening set, the 24-year-old Italian mounted a strong comeback to win the next three sets in a thrilling contest that lasted three hours and 46 minutes. The victory marked Sinner’s fifth Grand Slam title.
The triumph also extended Sinner’s unbeaten run against Zverev to 10 consecutive matches, while the German’s quest for a maiden Grand Slam title ended in disappointment once again.
Although Zverev struck 17 aces, Sinner remained composed during the key moments, winning 80 per cent of his first-serve points and converting two crucial break points to seal the championship.
With the victory, Sinner also became the eighth active player to register 100 Grand Slam match wins.
By lifting the Wimbledon trophy for the second year in a row, Jannik Sinner has further cemented his status as one of the dominant forces in men’s tennis.
