New Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday said the Modernisation and Upgradation of Mangaluru Fishing Harbour in Karnataka is progressing as planned, with 25% of the work completed and the remaining components scheduled for completion by May 21, 2027.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) said the project was approved in 2024 under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) at a total cost of ₹37.47 crore, including a Central assistance of ₹22.48 crore.
According to the government, the Department of Fisheries has released ₹126.01 crore for fisheries development projects in Karnataka during the period 2023-24 to 2026-27, which includes funding for the Mangaluru Fishing Harbour project. The Karnataka government has reported an expenditure of ₹6.31 crore on the harbour project so far.
Once completed, the upgraded harbour is expected to provide berthing facilities for around 1,600 fishing vessels and benefit nearly 18,000 fishermen and other stakeholders associated with the fisheries sector.
The Minister said that under PMMSY, fisheries development projects worth ₹1,053.60 crore have been approved for Karnataka between 2020-21 and 2026-27, with implementation at various stages. The Karnataka government has also reported that 212 beneficiaries across the state’s three coastal districts have received assistance under beneficiary-oriented schemes, including support for deep-sea fishing vessels, ice plants, cold storages, refrigerated and insulated transport vehicles, and motorcycles and three-wheelers equipped with ice boxes.
The Centre said PMMSY continues to support the fisheries sector through investments in fishing harbour infrastructure, fish landing centres, cold-chain facilities, hygienic fish handling systems, fish transport and marketing infrastructure, quality fish seed production, institutional credit, insurance coverage and capacity-building programmes aimed at improving productivity and strengthening the livelihoods of fishing communities.
