New Delhi: Delhi Police on Saturday alleged that an organised misinformation campaign using artificial intelligence (AI) tools was being carried out to spread false information about the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar, claiming that more than 400 Pakistan-linked social media accounts had been identified and blocked.
Addressing a press conference, police officials alleged that AI-generated videos, deepfakes, edited images and fabricated social media posts were used to mislead the public about the protest.
The police urged people to verify the authenticity of posts, videos and photographs related to the demonstrations before sharing them on social media.
According to the police, several misleading posts connected to the protest had gone viral over the past few weeks, particularly on Instagram. Officials also dismissed as false social media claims that the Centre was planning a large-scale crackdown on protesters at Jantar Mantar, stating that no such action had been proposed.
Police further alleged that the investigation had traced multiple accounts of Pakistani origin involved in disseminating misinformation and said more than 400 such accounts had been blocked. They also claimed that some of these accounts had previously circulated fake content during Operation Sindoor.
Separately, Delhi Police announced the formation of a Special Task Force (STF) under its Crime Branch to investigate the alleged question paper leak and irregularities in competitive examinations. The STF will function under the supervision of an officer of the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).
The police allegations regarding the origin of the accounts and their involvement in spreading misinformation have not been independently verified. No immediate response from the social media platforms or the alleged account operators was available.
