Bengaluru: Health Minister UT Khader has directed the Food Safety Department to extend inspections beyond hotels to PG accommodations, private hostels, bus stands, wedding halls, railway canteens and flights to ensure food safety.

Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, Khader said a QR code-based complaint system would soon be introduced at public-facing establishments, including hotels and medical stores. By scanning the QR code, people will be able to directly report issues related to food quality, service and other violations.

Strict action against unsafe food in PGs

Khader said inspections of hotels in Bengaluru would continue, while special attention would be given to food served to students and young people staying in PGs and hostels.

He warned that strict action, including closure of PGs, would be taken if food safety regulations were violated. PG owners should treat the students staying with them like their own children, he said.

Recently, officials inspected more than 60 three-star and five-star hotels, eight godowns and four restaurants in Bengaluru. Around 30 teams have been formed to monitor food storage, quality and safety standards.

Khader said the department’s priority is to strengthen food safety monitoring and ensure that complaints reach authorities quickly.
