New Delhi: Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini arrived at Livorno, Italy, on September 9 as part of its ongoing transoceanic expedition Lokayan 2026, covering more than 17,400 nautical miles across 10 countries.

The deployment is aimed at showcasing India’s maritime traditions while strengthening naval cooperation and people-to-people ties with partner countries.

Before reaching Livorno, INS Sudarshini conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the Italian Navy’s sail training ship ITS Palinuro in the Mediterranean Sea.

The exercise involved coordinated manoeuvring and sail-handling drills, allowing personnel from both navies to work together and exchange professional expertise.

The interaction also provided an opportunity for the crews of the two sailing ships to gain operational experience through joint activities at sea.

Livorno, home to the prestigious Italian Naval Academy (Accademia Navale), will provide further opportunities for professional engagement between the Indian and Italian navies.

During the port call, Indian trainees and Italian cadets are scheduled to undertake cross-deck visits and professional interactions. INS Sudarshini will also remain open to visitors, offering the local community an opportunity to view the Indian Navy’s sail training vessel.

The visit is part of the broader objectives of Lokayan 2026, which seeks to build maritime partnerships through naval interactions, training and cultural engagement.

The Indian Navy said the expedition continues to strengthen India’s maritime cooperation and reflects the country’s commitment to the MAHASAGAR vision — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.

Through its long-distance deployment, INS Sudarshini is carrying forward India’s rich sailing heritage while fostering friendship and professional ties with maritime nations along its route.
