New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi, with the two leaders reviewing progress in India-China ties and stressing the need for a long-term, strategic approach to bilateral relations.

The meeting came after their previous interaction in Tianjin in August 2025. Both leaders welcomed the steady improvement in ties and agreed that differences should not be allowed to turn into disputes.

Modi emphasised that India-China relations should be guided by mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.

He also underlined that peace and tranquillity along the border remains essential for the continued development of bilateral ties. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of both sides adhering to existing agreements and understandings on border issues.

The leaders reiterated their commitment to finding a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question, keeping in mind the broader political relationship and long-term interests of the two countries.

The two leaders also reviewed progress in people-to-people contacts and called for greater cultural exchanges, stronger business links and increased mobility between India and China.

On economic ties, Modi and Xi agreed on the need to address concerns including structural trade imbalances and supply-chain issues, while working towards meaningful and predictable market access.

The leaders further agreed to expand common ground on regional and global issues and work together in addressing emerging challenges.

Modi also appreciated China’s support for India’s BRICS chairship and its contribution to the successful conduct of the BRICS Summit 2026.
