New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported death of a four-year-old girl who allegedly fell into an uncovered manhole while playing near her home in Palwal, Haryana, on September 14.

The commission said that if the media report is found to be true, the incident raises serious concerns relating to violation of human rights.

The NHRC has issued notices to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Palwal, seeking a detailed report on the incident within two weeks.

The report has been sought on the status of the investigation and details of any compensation paid to the family of the deceased girl.

Residents had reportedly complained

According to the media report on which the commission took cognizance, local residents had allegedly made several complaints to the concerned authorities about the uncovered manhole, but it remained open.

The girl’s family and residents reportedly found her inside the manhole and rushed her to the District Civil Hospital in critical condition. Doctors declared her dead on arrival, according to the report.

The NHRC said it would examine the matter based on the report submitted by the district authorities.
