Bengaluru: Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday launched the ‘Freedom from Waste’ campaign near the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda statue at the Hebbal flyover, aiming to make Bengaluru a cleaner, greener and waste-free city.
Launching the drive, the Chief Minister said a total of 22,372 tonnes of waste will be cleared under the campaign. The initiative covers the removal of construction debris, solid waste, old electric poles, pipelines, earthen mounds, overgrown weeds and tree branches from various parts of the city.
Shivakumar said the campaign is focused on improving urban cleanliness, beautification and public health, adding that the government is committed to transforming Bengaluru into a model metropolis through sustained sanitation efforts and effective waste management.
He urged citizens, civic bodies and local organisations to actively participate in the campaign to ensure cleaner surroundings and maintain public spaces.
The launch event was attended by Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, Energy Minister K.J. George, Bengaluru North MP Shobha Karandlaje, MLAs S.R. Vishwanath and A.C. Srinivas, Greater Bengaluru Authority Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, along with senior officials and public representatives.
