Bengaluru: Laughter and excitement filled the premises of children’s homes in Bengaluru as children tried their hand at archery, participated in balancing games and enjoyed a variety of treats during a special recreational programme organised by the Lions Club and Carlene Foundation.

The programme brought together children from the Government Boys’ Children’s Home, Government Girls’ Children’s Home and Shishumandiras. Beyond entertainment, the initiative aimed to build confidence, introduce children to new experiences and create opportunities for meaningful interaction.

The event was held under the guidance of District Child Protection Officer Leena Kallammanavar, Bengaluru South District Child Protection Officer Asha H.K., Lions Club International director Vamshi Dhar Babu, Vijay Kumar, Manjunatha Babu and district president Shobha.

Children enthusiastically participated in activities, including archery and balancing games. Volunteers prepared and served dosa, puri, biryani, kebabs, sugarcane juice and burgers, spending time with the children and sharing in their happiness.

19-year-old inspires children through hard work

One of the highlights was the story of a 19-year-old college student who runs a burger stall named Disco Burger in the evenings while continuing her education.

She personally prepared and served different varieties of burgers to the children, demonstrating how determination and hard work can help young people pursue education while building financial independence.

Her example conveyed a simple message: education and work can go hand in hand. The Lions Club facilitated the opportunity to share her experience with the children.

Care beyond shelter

Children’s homes provide protection and support to children who are orphaned, abandoned or rescued from difficult circumstances, including child labour, trafficking, begging, child marriage and sexual abuse.

Along with shelter, emotional support and encouragement are essential to helping these children build a secure future. Educational assistance, computer training, automobile training and other skill-development programmes are among the efforts aimed at helping them integrate into mainstream society.

The programme highlighted the role voluntary organisations and other groups can play in creating positive experiences and opening new opportunities for children facing adversity. Beyond a day of games and treats, the interaction offered a message of hope, dignity and self-reliance.
