Guwahati/Ahmedabad: Fresh flooding hit Assam’s Dhemaji district on Saturday after the Jiadhal River overflowed due to heavy rainfall in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, inundating several low-lying villages and damaging houses.

Officials said Kamalpur-Dharmapur village was among the worst affected. A section of the river changed its course, causing severe erosion and washing away the house of Anima Hazarika. Villagers rescued Hazarika and her ailing daughter before the house was swept away. No casualties were reported, but the family lost all their belongings. According to the latest flood bulletin, over 11.45 lakh people have been affected across 25 districts in Assam this monsoon season.

Meanwhile, in Gujarat, more than 4,000 people have been evacuated from flood-prone villages in Surat district after relentless rainfall triggered rising river levels. The IMD has issued a Red Alert, and SDRF teams have been deployed in Olpad and Mandvi.

District Collector Tejas Parmar said all precautionary measures had been taken, with residents from villages along the Ambika and Kim rivers shifted to safer places. Surat received an average of 222 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, while Ambika taluka recorded 565 mm.

Authorities warned that heavy to extremely heavy rainfall could continue, with the Kim River expected to rise further. Rescue teams remain on high alert, while residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official advisories.
