Ganesh procession remarks spark row; Pratap Simha, Pralhad Joshi seek action against Karnataka inspector
Mysuru: A video purportedly showing T. Narasipura Police Inspector Dhananjay making strong remarks about Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations has gone viral on social media, triggering a political controversy and demands for action against the officer.
The video is said to have been recorded during a peace meeting held ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi. In it, the inspector reportedly spoke about restrictions and precautions relating to Ganesh processions, bursting of firecrackers and the use of DJ-style loudspeakers near mosques.
According to reports, Dhananjay told organisers that procession routes should be disclosed in advance and that participants must stick to the designated route. He also reportedly said security personnel would be deployed near mosques to prevent any untoward incidents.
However, the officer’s manner of speaking has drawn criticism, with allegations that his remarks were intimidating towards Hindu youths.
Pratap Simha hits out at inspector
Former BJP MP Pratap Simha reacted strongly to the video, saying police officers should maintain decorum and communicate with the public respectfully.
Simha questioned the manner in which the inspector addressed the issue and said such remarks were inappropriate for an officer holding a law-and-order responsibility.
Joshi seeks immediate suspension
Union minister Pralhad Joshi also criticised the reported remarks in a social media post and demanded immediate action against the inspector.
Joshi described the alleged warning to youths over Ganeshotsav celebrations as a serious issue and questioned why the officer felt empowered to make such statements publicly.
He alleged that an officer entrusted with maintaining law and order appeared to be favouring one community and called for Dhananjay’s immediate suspension.
Joshi also said Hindu festivals should not be restricted under the pretext of maintaining law and order, adding that celebrations must be regulated in accordance with the law without creating a sense of discrimination.
