BENGALURU: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday successfully launched the GSLV-F17 carrying an Earth observation satellite, marking a significant milestone for India’s space programme and giving a fresh boost to its indigenous launch capabilities.
The GSLV, often referred to as ‘Naughty Boy’ by space scientists because of its history of successes and failures, successfully completed its mission this time. The achievement is particularly significant because the rocket uses the complex cryogenic engine technology, which only a handful of countries have mastered.
Why the ‘Naughty Boy’ tag?
Unlike the PSLV, which is primarily used to launch lighter satellites, the GSLV is designed to carry heavier payloads into higher orbits. However, the GSLV programme has faced setbacks in the past, particularly during the development and operationalisation of its cryogenic upper stage.
The latest successful mission is therefore being seen as another demonstration of the reliability of India’s indigenous cryogenic technology.
Boost to weather, disaster monitoring
The Earth observation satellite launched aboard GSLV-F17 is expected to strengthen India’s capabilities in monitoring weather and natural disasters. Data from such satellites can support forecasting and tracking of cyclones, floods and other extreme weather events, besides benefiting agriculture and coastal monitoring.
Strategic and commercial significance
The ability to independently launch heavier satellites reduces India’s dependence on foreign launch providers and strengthens its position in the global space market.
With the GSLV proving its capabilities, India could also see greater opportunities to undertake commercial launches of heavier foreign satellites in the future.
For ISRO, the successful GSLV-F17 mission is more than another launch—it reinforces confidence in India’s ability to develop and operate sophisticated launch technologies indigenously.
