New Delhi: Opposition leaders on Sunday accused the BJP and the Election Commission of undermining democracy at the INDIA bloc’s ‘Vote Bachao-Desh Bachao’ rally at Ramlila Maidan, where Congress leader Rahul Gandhi demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The rally was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and several other opposition leaders.
Kharge alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was manipulating electoral rolls through the Election Commission. “It is not the voters who choose Modi, it is Modi who chooses the voters,” he said, accusing the BJP of influencing the addition and deletion of names from voter lists.
Rahul Gandhi described the gathering as the collective voice of the Opposition and said the Constitution was bigger than any political leader. He alleged that electoral irregularities had taken place in several states, including West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Haryana.
Calling for Gyanesh Kumar’s removal, Gandhi warned that those responsible for alleged electoral wrongdoing would face legal action. He also targeted Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying the Opposition would pursue accountability.
