New Delhi: Researchers from two institutes under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) have developed a new porous organic anode material that could significantly improve the performance of next-generation rechargeable batteries by enabling ultra-fast charging and longer battery life.

The collaborative research team from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) and the S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS) designed a covalent organic framework (COF) that allows lithium ions to move more efficiently, enhancing energy storage and charging speed.

According to the researchers, batteries using the newly developed material can reach 80% charge in just over one minute while maintaining stable performance over repeated charging and discharging cycles.

The team also demonstrated that the material can store sodium ions, paving the way for the development of lower-cost sodium-ion batteries as an alternative to conventional lithium-ion technology.

Scientists said the new organic anode combines rapid ion transport, efficient charge storage and structural stability, making it a promising candidate for future batteries used in electric vehicles, smartphones, laptops and renewable energy storage.

The researchers said the breakthrough could contribute to the development of safer, faster-charging and longer-lasting batteries, highlighting the potential of advanced organic materials in next-generation energy storage technologies.
