Mumbai: An eight-year-old girl was among two people killed and four others injured after an apparent electrical leakage near a Ganeshotsav pandal in Mumbai’s Lalbaug-Kalachowki area early Sunday, police said.
The incident occurred around 2.20am near the entrance of the Kalachowki Vibhag Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal’s Ganesh pandal on Dattaram Lad Marg, when a large number of devotees had gathered for darshan.
The injured were rushed to Masina Hospital in Byculla and Global Hospital in Parel. Eight-year-old Raghini Ghanshyam Yadav died at Masina Hospital, while 33-year-old Sujata succumbed at Global Hospital despite treatment.
Among the injured, 12-year-old Ruhi Singh was reported to be in critical condition, while the other three were stated to be stable.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade received an alert at around 2.42am, following which fire personnel, police, BEST officials and civic ward staff reached the spot. The electricity supply was disconnected and the area was secured.
BEST officials inspected the electrical infrastructure, including the meter and wiring installed for festive lighting and temporary stalls. The inspection was carried out after a local electrician had reportedly disconnected the wiring and MCB connection of the temporary meter.
The Kalachowki police have launched an investigation to establish the exact cause of the electrical leakage and determine whether any safety lapses contributed to the incident.
