NHAI to develop world-class public toilets at toll plazas across national highways
New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a nationwide initiative to develop world-class public toilet facilities at toll plazas, aiming to improve commuter convenience and raise sanitation standards across the National Highway network.
Under the initiative, NHAI will renovate existing toilet blocks and construct new facilities using standardised, indigenously developed designs featuring durable construction and sustainable, green building infrastructure. The project will be implemented through an innovative performance-based contract framework to ensure high standards of cleanliness, functionality and long-term maintenance.
The authority said the upgraded facilities will provide clean, safe and accessible public amenities, while maintaining uniform quality standards at toll plazas across the country.

To ensure consistent service quality, NHAI has introduced a technology-driven maintenance system incorporating Internet of Things (IoT)-based live telemetry for real-time monitoring of maintenance parameters. The digital platform is expected to enable proactive upkeep and improve operational efficiency.
The maintenance model also includes a performance-linked payment mechanism, under which agencies will be evaluated based on automated Service Level Agreements (SLAs), independent audits and commuter feedback received through the RajmargYatra mobile application.
In line with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016, all new facilities will feature barrier-free access for persons with disabilities. The upgraded sanitation blocks will also provide clean water, modern sanitation infrastructure and enhanced hygiene standards, with dedicated facilities designed to improve the safety and privacy of women travellers.
According to NHAI, the initiative is aimed at significantly improving the travel experience on national highways while establishing new benchmarks for public amenities through digital monitoring and outcome-based maintenance.
