New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will undertake a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka from September 8 to 10, with talks expected to focus on strengthening defence and maritime cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
Singh will hold discussions with Sri Lankan leadership on a range of bilateral and regional issues and interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Colombo. He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising senior officials from the Defence and External Affairs ministries.
India and Sri Lanka share longstanding civilisational ties and a broad-based partnership spanning defence, regional security, trade, economy and people-to-people relations.
India’s support to Sri Lanka during its economic crisis further strengthened bilateral ties. New Delhi also provided assistance as one of the first responders following Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka in 2025.
The developments highlighted India’s continued commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of MAHASAGAR — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.
Singh’s visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to the traditionally close and friendly relations between the two countries, particularly in areas of mutual interest.
The visit will also underscore India’s focus on strengthening its maritime partnership with Sri Lanka amid the growing importance of regional security and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
